Reelight SL500 Rear Taillight Review

Several years ago I was working in Japan and bought a bike for transportation. I wanted a taillight, so I bought one from a hardware store there for less than ten bucks which worked on the same induction or dynamo principle as this Reelight uses. It was far simpler, had a single magnet that attached neatly to the spokes, and the pickup and light were all in a single compact lightweight unit that mounted on the seat stay. Of course it never needed batteries. I loved that practical gadget, but can't find that type for sale anywhere now.

This Reelight is too bulky, too complicated, tries to fit every possible bicycle, yet doesn't fit my ordinary bicycle at all well.

There is no reason why the pickup coil unit needs to be so huge and bulky and heavy. It is ridiculous.

I would much rather have the light built into the pickup, and let the light shine through the spokes to the other side. The "advantages" of mounting the light elsewhere do not make up for the additional complication, exposure to damage, and wiring hassles.

The mounting straps for the pickup unit are so huge, so unnecessarily long... surely no bicycle on earth has frame stays so massive as to require this goofy design. The magnets are similarly designed with numerous extra screw holes to adapt to who-knows-what type of spoke lacing, yet don't really fit neatly in any one case.

The manufacturer intends you to mount the light unit up on your seat post. Unfortunately, if you have a rear rack or basket with anything much in/on it, it will block the taillight completely. Jeez, I thought this was a PRACTICAL accessory... why not design it for PRACTICAL bicycles? So I wanted to mount the light at the rear of my rack, which has a cargo bag strapped on top at all times. Guess what? The wire is too short! Plus they do not include any mount to fit any alternate locations.

It really irritates me to know that this whole thing could have been so much simpler, so much lighter, so much easier to install, so much more practical... and so much cheaper, to boot.

I bought this jacket because it was described as having a relaxed fit with good wind protection. It works and fits as advertised. Its a bit snug but relaxed around the waist. Certainly not tight or restrictive. It has pretty good wind blocking in chilly weather. But you'll want to layer up if used in cold weather (under say 40 degs). I thought the small number of pockets would be a potential problem. But its hasn't been an issue so far.

This bicycle jersey is really great for cool weather, but runs small. I wear an American Medium, but I should have ordered a Large! Though, hope it will fit if/when I lost the 10 lbs as planned! It's really good for hot days bike riding, to avoid sleeve tan lines. I still wore it, and the lightweight silky feel is great. Pockets on the back are slightly smaller than usual, but nothing fell out.

The ride is a little bit harsh, and it's kind of heavy, so I gave it four stars. Unior Pedal Tap and Thread Insert Set 9/16" Review

I wanted some 180 mm for the captain on the tandem and 165 for the stoker (my spin rate is much higher than the stokers). Good luck finding these size cranks inexpensively! By purchasing inexpensive standard cranks and using this Kit, I was able to put correct left hand thread on the left side cranks (yes in meantime I did have to use some right hand pedals from road bike, and yes the Wright Brothers were correct, the pedals do unwind and work their way out !) . I could have thread-locked right hand pedals into the cranks, but what if it still works loose or if I use the super strong threadlock then it might need heat when ever need to remove? So yes I decided it would be much better just to do right, and also I figure it never hurts to invest in tools.

So far I have converted 3 or 4 cranks. I was little concerned about get the new thread insert in perfectly perpendicular, but this tool is designed with good lead in taper to make this fairly fool proof. I had no issues. Typically I don't go all the way through with the tap but leave a thread or two so that the insert will jam onto. I also use the loctite cylindrical retaining compound. After it cures, with 45 deg chamfer tool, I remove what ever insert that is not in the crank.

I find the taps to be high quality and the left tap still looks like new after 4 or 5 uses. (be liberal with cutting oil !). I think I did use the right tap as well to convert some 170 or 175 left tandem cranks into normal cranks.
