KMC X10SL Gold 10 Speed Chain for Shimano Sram Review

Just like the other reviewer, the chain did not come in an OEM box. It came in a black box with a description label slapped on it. I'm not certain if it's an actual KMC chain. The markings do match my other Gold X10SL though. My other X10SL chain is terrific, smooth shifting, and much more quite than my previous SRAM 1090 chain. If it's real, it's worth it, 5 stars. Origin8 Mini Trigger Lever RH White/Silver Review

I rated it 3 stars due to the sellers lack of specs in the product info and the specs are not listed on the packaging either. This is a tiny brake lever. It will not fit 26.0 x 42cm bars or other "bullhorn" style bars. Buyer beware! I had to manipulate these to work with my Origin8 Bullhorn Bars (I slightly stretched the clamp then bought a longer allen bolt). They still look pretty but have a feeling they won't be coming off those bars without destruction. They work great. I got my LBS to install a white brake cable to match the whole bike style. They work great. No loss of power or strength so far.

Rohloff Chain Wear Indicator Review

There's a problem with this tool -- as well as its copycats by Park, Sette and others -- that consistently creates premature "worn out" indications on chains that are still good for use.

The problem is a near and dear pet peeve of mine, and has been for a long time. It is difficult to describe using just words, as I've learned from previous discussions online, but I'll try: This style of wear indicator pushes two of the chain's rollers in opposite directions, so not only is it measuring chain elongation due to wear, it is also measuring the slop between a roller and the pin (where slop is always present, even on a new chain, but the amount of slop is inconsistent between brands & even models of chains).

For a good graphical representation of the problems of this design of chain wear indicator, use your favorite search engine to look for "pardo chain wear measuring tools" (pardo,net being the host website, not a seller or maker of chain gauges).

With this tool, I consistently received "no go" indications when the chain was just over half-way to the real wear limit.

So far, the only wear tool I'm familiar with (but haven't owned) that measures correctly is the Shimano TL-CN41 Chain wear indicator. It uses three prongs, two of which push two chain rollers in the same direction (just as a cassette or chainring would) and checks the distance between them. With this approach, the tool is measuring only chain elongation, and roller slop is not a factor.

(There's the presumption that roller slop is the same for each roller in the chain, but that assumption is just as relevant when the chain is brand new as when it is worn.)

My own method is the "12 and 1/16th rule" and requires only an accurate steel ruler. The distance between two chain pins is exactly 1/2 inch on a new chain, or 12 inches when measuring across 24 links. Once 24 links measure out to 12-1/16", the chain should be replaced without risking damage to the cassette cogs and chainrings.

The good news about the Rohloff Caliber, and others like it, is they'll never give a false "OK" condition. So from that standpoint, if you use this tool, your drivetrain will remain in great shape. But you'll be spending nearly 2x as much on replacement chains.

It's regrettable I feel compelled to give this a one-star rating -- after all, I'm a huge fan of Rohloff and there's no doubt that the Caliber is a precisely engineered and manufactured instrument. But if it's measuring the wrong thing, all the rest is for naught.

Update, June 2013:
I have a total of 855 miles on three different bicycles with these shifters. Including rain and snow. Except for initial problems listed below they have operated perfectly. I have a 70 year old neighbor friend who just purchased a bicycle with these shifters and everything is perfect and she is very happy with them compared to twist grip shifters.

I would buy these again and I would recommend these to a friend, just do not to hesitate to return these if they have initial quality control problems.

Original review, Sept 2012:
I purchased 4 different bikes this Summer all had this shifter. Two of the bikes shift great and the other two had real bad shifting with the front derailleur. I thought maybe it was because of the cheap no name derailuer. In frustration in trying to get the shifting properly adjusted, I took off the covers to this shifter. Inside I found lots of aluminum metal shavings scraped off from where the bottom of the thumb shifter rides. The escapement mechanism was full of burrs so I went in with gunsmith / jewelers files and a small machinists scraper to smooth the cog surfaces out. Then I touched the surfaces up with Park Tools Poly lube grease.

This makes shifting smoother. Must have slipped past quality control. This being Shimano, I am very disappointed.

I would not discourage anyone from purchasing this shifter as I love riding with them when they are working properly.

Topeak Ride-Up Stand Review

I have now had this stand for one year.

It has done a great job keeping my bike upright and secure in my 1 br NYC apartment living room - ready to ride at a moment's notice. It is easy to set up and use.

The flaw came to light a few weeks ago. There is a small yellow plastic cup in each side of the "screw vise" clamping apparatus which is the part in which the rear spindle/axle of the bike is held. The yellow cup is kept in place by a very tiny screw. Very tiny, and easy to lose, and completely non-standard - not easy to replace if lost.

One day the yellow cup came loose and the stand no longer clamped my bike in place. Just like that. A tiny, cheap part. Luckily I found the teeny-tiny retaining screw on the floor under the stand (somehow spared from my occasional vacuuming). I re-installed the yellow plastic cup with the screw using the tip of a kitchen knife blade as a screw driver (the head of the screw is THAT tiny).

The stand now works fine again.

I cannot believe that a manufacturer would design/build a product where something seemingly this tiny can essentially cause product failure.

M-Wave Folding Pedal (Black, 9/16) Review

I ordered these based on a single positive review and the price. These were to serve as pedals for my daughter's bike (we live in New York City and need every bit of space we can get). Hence, having a pedal that has a smooth folding mechanism was critical (she is 10 years-old).

On their arrival, I found one seemed to have a fairly smooth mechanism, but the other jammed roughly 80% out of the times I tried to open and close it. I put some oil in the sliders hoping that would resolve the issue, and it did - but only temporarily. A few more test tries proved the pedal to be of faulty construction. It consistently jammed, so much so that it required considerable strength to work the pedal back in and out. Slight adjustment on the squeeze mechanism was not the issue - craftsmanship was.

Returned for a refund - not willing to try again with this company. These should have been checked thoroughly for functionality before being shipped out.
