GMC Denali Boy's 24-Inch Road Bike Review

This size bike is hard to find and so you are limited as to what you can reasonably find if you have a 9 year old, like our son, who wants to get out on the road and do some fast miles. The bike came in bad shape and it needed lots of mechanical attention, I'm a professional bike mechanic and founder of Bikes Not Bombs an organization that recycles 5,000 bikes per year to developing countries and works with inner city youth and adults in the Boston area. I knew, by the other reviews, that I was going to have to work on it. I also knew that I was going to retrofit it with a lot of different parts.
So here goes. The frt deraillure was a mess, the spring had come off its tension post and getting it back on required grinding a v notch into an old screw driver; the wheels were very out of true side to side as well as round; as was reviewed by many, the brakes are pretty cheap, however its really the fashion that they are secured by not their quality so much, but I just bought some Tektro dual pivot brakes and drilled the right size hole in the fork brake bolt hole to allow for the recessed allen head bolt of the newer brakes. Unfortunately I still have to get a 90degree angle drill to drill the rear brake bridge. I like the frame and I like the shifters, at my sons age its good to have them high on the tops of the bars. I bent the brake levers inward so he could reach them better they are full adult size which is ridiculous for this sized bike. I put on a used rear deraillure, the stock one is pure junk, finally I ordered 110PSI Wheel chair racing tires and installed them. The rims are drilled for schraeder so I had to get rubber gromets to flesh out the holes for presta valves. The hub cones where very tight as was the Bottom Bracket, so be prepared to adjust them correctly. I will probably rebuild the wheels at some point with better quality hubs. I also replaced the falcon freewheel with a Shimano one, I never trust those falcons, be careful taking them off they require a special tool even though they look identical to the Shimano they aren't. My son loves this bike, but as you can see its a handypersons special. I probably spent $165 on the parts I mentioned and that doesn't include labor to get it dialed in, but even then its a good deal for whats out there. If you have the skills its a good value.
