Product Description

The Mk XII was the first production version of the Spitfire to use the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. The Griffon was a development of the "R" sprint engine used in the Supermarine Schneider Trophy racing seaplanes of the late 1920s and early 1930s. The low level performance of the Mk XII was very useful when dealing with low level hit and run raids mounted by the Fw 190, and later helped against the V-1, though the mark did not enter mass production. Only 100 were built, equipping two squadrons - No.41 received its Mk XIIs in February 1943, and No.91 in April 1943.

The Airfix Spitfire Mk XII is the first "large" (1/48th) dedicated kit that allows the modeler to build this unique variant straight out of the box, and produce an excellent model. The molding is crisp, with no "flash". The panel lines are recessed. The parts fit well, and the kit has included a few options for the canopy, flaps, and tailwheel. In addition, the main wheels are realistically flattened on the bottoms, eliminating the need to replace them with aftermarket extras. The instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow. There is an excellent painting guide reproduced in color. The decal sheet has every conceivable stencil, and markings for the two squadrons that flew the Mk XII. The roundels are in excellent registration e.g. they are "round", accurate, concentric circles.

The Spitfire Mk XII ("Mark Twelve") was the subject of some excellent wartime air to air photography by some of the world's greatest aviation photographers. This compelling visual record has found its way into print countless times over the years, whetting the modeling appetite for building a Spitfire Mk XII. This usually entailed the use of a limited production vacuformed kit, or conversion parts added to an existing model, or kit-bashing one from several Spitfire kits from various manufacturers, or a below par limited-run kit requiring more than average assembly skills. No longer!

This kit is all I had ever hoped for in a Spitfire Mk XII. It leap-frogs ahead of all those kits and bits I had collected over the years (decades!), hoping to someday build a model worthy of those great photos....
