I bought one of these lights while working as a bike courier and commuting to and from school by bike: in other words, for riding a lot, in all kinds of weather conditions. One year later, it's still going strong. I recharge it maybe once a month in summer; twice in winter. The silicone cover is a little dingy now, but I don't care. It keeps the 'guts' of the light dry, which keeps the light working. At this point, I don't even bother with other options. I keep a mini light on the bike as a backup, but it never gets used anymore.
The light's job is to keep my bike visible to drivers, other cyclists, pedestrians, and so forth. It does this in blink mode by day and steady mode by night and does it well. Its bright white LEDs cut through the gloom and dark of night. The only drawback is that the white 'skin' with no topside shielding means blink mode at night is a non-starter -- it's simply too distracting. If your bike's geometry allows you to mount it on the headtube, though, it would probably work fine. Come to think of it, a fork-mounted option could also work.
Moreover, excepting a pair of Planet Bike's 'Spok' models, this is the ONLY light that has passed the test of a Louisville winter with flying colors. Lesser lights rarely make it through one day on salty, slushy roads - leaks let salty water in, which damages the internal electronics. The worst can't even survive in plain old rain. If you know you're going to be out on the road all day, every day, you need a lit you can count on. This is that light.
Yes, these lights cost about three times as much as many non-rechargeable rivals - but even lights approaching this one in price haven't held up to the abuse year-round outdoor cycling dishes out. The fact that it's easy to pop on and off is a big bonus.
This isn't the light to get you through PBP or a long solo night ride in the country - but for in-town riding, where streetlights provide adequate light to see by, I would go so far as to say it's the best there is. Two would be ideal.
I haven't tried the taillights yet, since I had a significant back stock of inexpensive blinkies I'd received as gifts - but with winter just around the bend again and most of my blinkies dead in the water (literally, heh!), I'll be purchasing a pair of these in red to mount in back - one on the left seat stay, one on the seat post. I expect the same outstanding performance from those as well.
One last thing - when the battery is starting to run down, a little red LED flashes under the headlight's 'skin' when you turn it on. When battery 'death is imminent, the red 'skin' light stays on when you turn the light on -- but you can still get a good half an hour or so out of the light in blink mode at this point, which will let many bike commuters make it all the way home. This is one of the single most thoughtful bits of engineering I've seen anywhere, period.
Bravo, Topeak!
