I bought these as my first pair of cleat pedals. At first, I used them with regular, aggressive-treaded sneakers (adidas brand)and had no slippage on my rides. I later upgraded to biking shoes and started with cleats. I set the tension of the pedals to the lowest as they would go and found no issues getting out of them when necessary.

A major benefit of cleats is when you jump anything. When clipped in, I can jump my entire bike over a log now instead of popping the front tire and "bumping" over. Another benefit I've found is you have more control and power in your movements; you are more "connected". But if you decide you don't like the feeling of clips, then just wear some aggressive tread shoes and they are like regular pedals.

I'm guessing these would not be great with dress shoes or converse-type treads as they don't have large teeth on the non-clip part of the pedal.
