Surly Singleator Black, One Size Review

So this chain tensioner/guide works. It is a bit on the heavy side, 124.7 grams. For the price this should include a pulley with ceramic bearings. This comes with a cheap bushing style pulley wheel (see photo for this item). Origin 8 makes a nearly identical chain guide with ceramic bearings. It just has a different approach to the pulley guard. Actually, I am not certain even a pulley is necessary for a fixie or single-speed setup, since the horizontal chain position would remain fixed. A urethane roller is all one needs.

While one can argue the toss about the value of a spring loaded tensioner, the true value here is the horizontal adjustment, since it is unpredictable where the chain might be relative to the frame with the variety and the many combination of cranks, frame sizes and rear hub sizes.
