I have a mountain bike and do a standard 15 mile ride a few times a week, half on road and half on flat trails. The standard 6 inch wide seat it came with was a killer and I stopped riding because of the pain it created in my groin nerves. The second half of the ride I would switch back and forth from butt bone to butt bone so not to put pressure in the middle. Or, I'd stand up on the pedals and coast to relieve the pain. I had to buy a seat that took the pressure on both butt bones at the same time (this I read is where the pressure should be). This seat is 9 inches wide (8 3/4 inches when I measure it) and perfectly places both my butt bones on each side (I'm 6' 1"). I'm pretty certain if I bought their 7 1/2 inch wide model it would have been too narrow for me once again putting pressure on the groin nerves between the butt bones, but I didn't want to go to the 11 1/2 inch wide model since my bike is not a beach cruiser so to speak (wanted to keep my mountain bike sporty looking, but comfortable). If this bike was purely for leasure and light riding, I'd bought the 11 1/2 wide model, but I do try to ride it hard sometimes and wanted it to look sporty, and this seat still looks sporty on my bike. Only pain I have now is that with a wider seat, since you engage the butt muscles (glutes), this causes pressure on the seat I didn't have before as you flex your butt muscles (this is why I read professional rides don't use wide seats so not to block use of their muscles), but this pain is 1/5 of the pain I had when my seat was between my butt bones! It's tolerable and I can do my 15 mile ride fine now with minimal pain (or the thought that I may go impotent one day because I'm pressuring my groin nerves!)
