Update, June 2013:
I have a total of 855 miles on three different bicycles with these shifters. Including rain and snow. Except for initial problems listed below they have operated perfectly. I have a 70 year old neighbor friend who just purchased a bicycle with these shifters and everything is perfect and she is very happy with them compared to twist grip shifters.

I would buy these again and I would recommend these to a friend, just do not to hesitate to return these if they have initial quality control problems.

Original review, Sept 2012:
I purchased 4 different bikes this Summer all had this shifter. Two of the bikes shift great and the other two had real bad shifting with the front derailleur. I thought maybe it was because of the cheap no name derailuer. In frustration in trying to get the shifting properly adjusted, I took off the covers to this shifter. Inside I found lots of aluminum metal shavings scraped off from where the bottom of the thumb shifter rides. The escapement mechanism was full of burrs so I went in with gunsmith / jewelers files and a small machinists scraper to smooth the cog surfaces out. Then I touched the surfaces up with Park Tools Poly lube grease.

This makes shifting smoother. Must have slipped past quality control. This being Shimano, I am very disappointed.

I would not discourage anyone from purchasing this shifter as I love riding with them when they are working properly.
