The spring is pointless. I've never understood how it might be useful. It could hold a newspaper down on your commute, or a jacket, but for anything else you have to carry, it doesn't do anything to help out. I eventually used a reciprocating saw (AKA Sawzall) to remove it. The spring also gets in the way of some pannier clips.

Other than that, the quality of the rack is good. My favorite feature of the rack is the MTX attachment system. This is really a simple rail that allows Topeak-produced accessories to be locked in place. One of those accessories is this: Topeak MTX Rear Bicycle Basket, which I also reviewed.
