The spring is pointless. I've never understood how it might be useful. It could hold a newspaper down on your commute, or a jacket, but for anything else you have to carry, it doesn't do anything to help out. I eventually used a reciprocating saw (AKA Sawzall) to remove it. The spring also gets in the way of some pannier clips.Other than that, the quality of the rack is good.
