Nashbar Essential Tool Kit Review

I have lots of tool, just not bike specific ones. This kit has a spoke wrench that fits a couple of bikes, but not the newer ones. No tool for removing the rear Shimano gear cluster. Cheap screwdrivers and flimsy wrenches. It's more like a kids tool kit. Better off buying the tools you need instead of the kit. The Nashbar torque wrench is very nice though.

Lezyne Classic Patch Kit Review

The Lezyne Classic Tube Patch kit is another quality product from the Lezyne line of cycling products. It is not compact or flat so it is not as suited to carrying in jersey pocket or seat pack as some of the other Lezyne patch kits are. But this one has everything you will need to patch a tube or tire, scuffer, round and oval patches, and rubber adhesive. I perfer to use rubber adhesive when repairing a tube if time allows. This kit has a metal scuffer which I prefer instead of a piece of sandpaper.

After buying this and the Avenir 32H Alloy 24 Inch x 1.50 Inch 7spd Freewheel Rear Wheel, Black, as a replacement to my old rims on my bike, due to a snapped axle. These rims are very nice, lightweight, and roll as smooth as a hot knife through butter. I did have to dissemble the bearings to pack them with more grease (I would recommend this before you use them as for they are packed lightly for shipping)

Over all a few months later I am very impressed with these rims.

Airfix A05115A Supermarine Spitfire MkI 1:48 Scale Military Aircraft Series 5 Model Kit Review

I bought this kit simply for the decal options and didn't expect it to compare to Tamiya's excellent Spitfire Mk.1 but I was pleasantly surprised. This is not the Airfix of old. The execution is very nice with engraved panel lines, a good interior and good quality decals for three subjects, two Spitfire Mk 1's and a Mk. 2. While it doesn't fit quite as well as the Tamiya Mk.1 it certainly has the look of the early Spitfire and has the option of building a very early Mk.1 with the two blade propeller and flat canopy. The only real knocks on this model are the thick trailing edges of the wings and the flaps that can be modeled in the down position. The flaps don't really fit well at all and the center piece that forms part of the flap bay is poorly done. Most Spitfires are seen with the flaps in the flight or up position since it was a cardinal sin to taxi with them extended. That being said this is a nice model that fits well with any Battle of Britain collection and I'd solidly recommend it to modelers with some building experience.

Avenir Cone Wrench Set Review

First of all to be clear, this is a set of two IDENTICAL cone wrenches. As another reviewer pointed out, each wrench is gapped for 15/13 mm on one end, and 16/14 mm on the other end.

The advantage of this design is its flexibility: a 2-wrench set replaces 8 single-end wrenches or 4 double-end cone wrenches.

The disadvantage of this design, as discussed by another reviewer, is that only half of the wrench end makes contact with the cone, meaning the torque you can apply is limited. E.g., you have to be careful and pay attention to what you are doing rather than simply torque as hard as you can. But this is true of all multi-purpose tools: they rarely work as well as the individual tools, but they get the job done, take up a lot less space and (usually) save a significant amount of money (meaning initial investment) compared to buying individual tools.

So if you are just starting out in bike maintenance and do not want to spend a lot of money until you figure out whether you will actually commit the time to do your own bike maintenance, this is a good cheap way in. If do commit, you will likely eventually buy better single-end cone wrenches for an average of $10 each (e.g. Park or Pedro brand). But in the mean time, these will help you get some basic bike maintenance done for a very reasonable price.

And yes, you will need a 17/18mm cone wrench as well.

Last thing: these are CONE wrenches, not normal wrenches. E.g., they are very thin to get into narrow spaces, to apply limited amount of torque to a cone on a hub (hence the name). Most cone wrenches are NOT strong enough to apply heavy torque to something with a wide surface (e.g. a pedal, outer hub nut, etc). In those situations, use a "normal" wrench or socket wrench instead!
