I really like this kit. It has quite a few advantages and not many drawbacks, as follows:The good: 1. Overall, the fit of the parts is very good, and you won't find much flashing in this kit. 2. The supplied paint guide is thorough and easy to understand, and, printed on glossy paper in color, it even LOOKS good; it's almost suitable for framing. 3. The styrene is molded in sky blue, which makes details easy to see and any slight problems a breeze to clean up. I generally don't like models molded in black or dark gray because it's harder to see what you're doing as you work on them.
The bad: 1. The assembly instructions call for using a modeling scalpel or Xacto knife to cut notches if you're going to display the model with the forward dive planes extended. Message to Airfix (and other manufacturers, for that matter): EVERY sub aficionado I know builds kits with the planes visible, so why not just pre-cut the notches for us? If we want, for some reason, to build a particular boat with the planes retracted into the hull, we can fill the holes easily enough with Mr. Surfacer or the like. 2. The largely pictorial assembly instructions are generally quite good but I would have appreciated some textual explanation in a couple spots.
The ugly: That would be the three-piece hull, the only thing about this model kit that I REALLY dislike. Most of the sub models I've worked on feature two-piece hulls, either top and bottom or port and starboard. And some of THEM are problematic because the fit might not be so good. This model has an upper hull, but the lower is split into port and starboard pieces. That makes it twice as hard to get all the seams properly aligned. Plan on using plenty of masking tape on this one as you let the cement dry.
Still, I have no hesitation in giving this a four-star rating. I've built subs in scales ranging from 1/700 to 1/72, with the brands including Hobby Boss, Lindberg, Revell, Revell of Germany, Bronco and Dragon. This Airfix kit is among the best I've seen.
