This is a great product for the headphone-averse bike rider. I have never used an music player while riding, but I found this to be a great product at a very affordable price, especially in comparison to the more expensive alternatives,PROS
1) My greatest concern upon purchasing this product, especially since I got it through the Internet with no means of testing it first-hand, was the sound quality. For $50, I was pleasantly surprised. The speakers handle highs and lows reasonably well, and since the player is positioned underneath the handlebars, volume is never a problem, regardless of your riding speed. I haven't used the player in more adverse conditions (high winds, rain), but so far it has held up well.
2) The device fits very snugly under the handlebars, and I found it to be noninvasive to my riding and virtually unnoticeable in terms of weight. This may change depending on your mp3 player of choice (I use an iPod Nano 6g, so its a non-factor), but probably not significantly so. The player has a curved plastic piece to fit directly on the stem, and is kept in place by a slightly elastic rubber loop, which is perfect for quick removals and attachments. Despite the non-permanent attachment, I found it to remain stable during my rides. It must be noted that I use the player exclusively on a road bike, so I cannot vouch for its invasiveness or stability on other bike types and conditions. Based on my observations, I would say that unless your are putting your bike through the grinder and doing jumps/drops, the stability should be a non-issue.
3) The player uses an AUX connection, so you can use it with virtually any device (cell phones and mp3 players alike). There is enough space in the case so you can store additional items, but not a whole lot. I would not recommend it as an alternative to a pouch underneath your saddle (for longer rides, I store my ID, health card, snacks, etc) but it's a nice optional supplemental storage.
CONS
1) As to be expected with small, cheaper speakers at this wattage, the sound quality will falter at highs, and, in particular, lows. This is not a major concern, as I found that as long as you can change the equalizer settings on your player to reduce bass, the speakers hold up fine. Even so, the sound quality will takes a dip in these conditions, particularly when playing electronic music or other genres with multi-layering and heavy bass. Still, these are bike speakers, not a home theatre system, so it shouldn't be a major concern.
2) Despite the display picture shown on this page, this product does NOT include any sort of mount for the mp3 player. I didn't find this to be a problem, since I'd prefer to keep my mp3 player secured in the case, and I make playlists for my rides so I don't need to bother worrying about the song mid-ride. I haven't investigated if there is an affordable/effective means to mount a music player, or some sort of dongle to change the tracks/volume wirelessly, but honestly, if you just set your volume and playlists prior to your ride, it shouldn't be a problem.
3) The speakers use two AA batteries. I haven't done enough riding to ascertain the battery life, but ibf you have rechargeable AAs handy, I'd use them.
Overall, I would say that this product is a very economic alternative to more expensive mounted mp3 players for bicycle riders, and I would heartily recommend it. Happy riding!
