Basic logic tells us that more ventilation equates to less materials, meaning that a well ventilated helmet should, in theory, be lightweight. However, comparing the the Louis Garneau Diamond II to the Quartz II turns this logic on its head. You see, while the Diamond II has the most ventilation ports of any helmet on the market, 40 in total, it comes in 35 grams heavier than the 33-vent, 285 gram Quartz II. Surely, some engineering wizardry is at work. So, how did Garneau do it? Essentially, it was accomplished through its patented Super MSB (Monocoque Structural Base) and a careful material selection. Basically, these two components work in unison to eliminate the commonality of rib construction in helmets. As Garneau puts it, the prior means of manufacturing adds weight and minimizes the amount of potential ventilation, all the while without increasing safety. And while all of that sounds pointless and archaic, the solution was complicated from engineering standpoint. The path to the Quartz II took a few steps. The Super MSB structure is basically a supportive base that's akin to an exoskeleton. It has a polycarbonate, monocoque construction, meaning that it's formed in one piece. This reinforces the perimeter of the helmet, while supporting the carbon composite skeleton reinforcement with confidence -- and this is where the rib-replacement comes into play. Together, the two systems position two polycarbonate bars within the helmet structure, with an additional nine carbon fiber bridge inserts. The system provides targeted structural support to the helmet in the case of collision. For further reinforcement, the entire structure is created with In-Mold construction. This means that the helmet's shell and foam liner are molded together at the same time. With Garneau's new structural design, it was able to increase the ventilation without degrading strength. But Garneau wasn't finished with the Quartz II's comfort.

I really very much like Louis Garneau Helmets. My previous Garneau helmet, the lower grade, now "retired" but still excellent Exo Nerv (also, light, airy and well fitting) met it's end in a crash, I immediately sought another Garneau to replace it. My first stop was at my LBS, where unfortunately they only had this helmet in a size too large. I then shopped around for other brands but simply could not find a helmet that fit like a Garneau at a reasonable price. Some fit well, but were too expensive (Giro). Some didn't feel right on my head (Lazer, Bell). After exhausting other options, I opted to buy the Quartz II online without ensuring proper fit, and I am glad I did.

The deep channels let you really feel the air flowing over your head while traveling at speed. When going more slowly while climbing, the massive size of the vents allows heat to dissipate more passively better than any helmet I've ever used.

The build quality is also excellent. The entire EPS base of helmet is wrapped in plastic/carbon (around the bottom of the helmet too!) to ensure those little knocks your helmet takes while handling it during every day use don't deform the helmet. The straps are long enough that i have considered trimming them down to be a bit shorter, but are very comfortable on the skin. The ear buckles are not the best I've used, but they aren't the worst either and seem as though they will stand the test of time.

Adjustability with this helmet is simple, but effective. Your forehead rests against the comfortable internal padding (2 sets included), and the tightness is controlled by a single dial at the back of the helmet. This makes for easy adjustments on the go. Vertical adjustment have to be done off the bike, but are also simple to do.

The Quartz II is not the most lightweight lid, so if that is your main goal, I would look elsewhere. If quality and reliability at a good price are, it is an excellent helmet.

A couple additional notes: This helmet in medium fits my 7 3/8 hat size head with enough space to fit either a regular cycling cap, or my Castelli Risvolto underneath. It does not feel loose when worn by itself either nor does it look bulky. Sunglasses fit easily in the big lower side vents, the hold is pretty secure, and the vents are deep enough so the sunglass arms do not dig into your head.
