Maxxis Ardent LUST Tubeless Tire, 29" x 2.25", Black/Black Review

I'm running this tire on the front of my GT Sensor 9r, replacing the OE Kenda Karma that didn't have enough bite. I bought the LUST version for the beefier sidewall, and the ability to run Tubeless when I upgrade my wheelset. I'm running this tire with a tube for now.

Maxxis positions the Ardent as their wet/loose tire, and it performs very well in those conditions, everything from mud to damp rocks and roots. It is wearing very well, and has stood up to super-rocky technical stuff that eats sidewalls for breakfast.

I'm also impressed with how well it does in dry/hard conditions, as well. I rode a small race that had a road portion, and noticed that only the center ridge of knobs was turning blue on the pavement. The tire rolls really well on pavement and hardpack. Contrast this to the Kenda Nevegal, which I have on my "mud bike." It earns the nickname Never-roll; makes you feel like you're dragging an anchor behind you. The Ardent bites just as well as the Nevegal, without the downside.

My only knock against the Ardent, and the reason for four stars out of five, is the price. I'm trying the Geax Gato TNT 2.25, which is a $40 tire instead of a $60 tire; if it comes close to the performance of the Ardent, I will probably make the switch.
